El 21 de octubre se celebró en la sede del Banco la ceremonia de entrega de los Premios Ortiz Mena a destacados funcionarios del BID.

Por más de 20 años, la Asociación de Empleados del Banco ha realizado anualmente el concurso de pintura
de los niños. La idea es que los hijos de los empleados participen en una actividad en el lugar de trabajo de
sus padres.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony (“Tony”) Williams visited the Bank on September 13 for an event celebrating the 30^th anniversary of the D.C. Office on Latino Affairs (OLA) and Hispanic Heritage Month, hosted by the IDB-DC Solidarity Program.

Puerto Rican pop star and children’s advocate Ricky Martin made a brief appearance at IDB headquarters on September 25 to report on progress in his anti-people-trafficking campaign, “Call and Live” (Llama y vive).

The IDB Cultural Center continues to be actively involved in the annual Washington Latin American Film Festival. It kicked off this year’s festival on September 19 with the premier of “Al otro lado” (“To the Other Side”).

The IDB Cultural Center hosted the opening of this year’s Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, a five-day event in early October featuring over 50 performances at concert venues throughout Washington, D.C.

Some 40 children, ranging in age from pre-kindergarteners to college kids, participated in this year’s Children’s Painting Contest, organized by the Staff Association in October.

The monthly luncheon, which took place on October 17, featured a presentation by President Luis Alberto Moreno, who spoke about the future action the Bank in the region.

IDB’s Pilar Meier remembers when more than 10 years ago she started working on the Shoebox Project at the Bank. This initiative for the homeless provides shoeboxes filled with gifts, from toys to stationary to gloves, that are given away to the less fortunate in Washington, D.C.

When we talk about the new “greener” cafeteria, we mean more than extra lettuce in the salad bar or a fresh coat of paint. The Bank went beyond a redesign of its staff cafeteria and used alternative, environmentally responsible materials when remodeling the space.

The year 2007 brought many changes to the Bank—the realignment, the “restacking,” in which hundreds of staff changed offices, and the replacement of all the computers in the Bank.  Close to 1,500 computers at headquarters and 1,000 in the country offices had to be replaced in order to improve efficiency, standardize the equipment and provide better support and service to its staff.

On Thursday, October 30, 2008, Executive Director for the United States Miguel San Juan recognized the artwork of four young artists from the neediest segment of the Latino and Caribbean communities in Washington, DC who participated in the 2008 IDB Holiday Season Card contest. The children received prizes (Toys R’ Us gift cards), certificates and candy.
